Landscape architecture that creates a feeling of home

Why do we immediately feel at ease in some places? A landscape architect explains how the environment affects our well-being. “For the past hundred years, we have been living indoors, but for thousands of years, humans lived in nature. Our genes are still searching for places with tall trees, greenery, and a safe environment,” says Landscape Architect Edgars Neilands. This idea became one of the foundations of the Trebū HOME greening concept.

When designing the area, the goal was not simply to plant trees or create a beautiful courtyard. The goal was to create an environment where people want to spend time – where children would play, neighbours would meet, families would go for evening walks, and home would extend beyond the walls of their apartments.

The historic apple orchard has been preserved

Not every new residential project succeeds in preserving the area’s historic identity. Trebū HOME has managed to do just that.

As Edgars Neilands points out, for Latvians, the apple tree symbolises home, family, and the continuity of generations. It is not merely a decorative element, but a significant part of the area’s identity. In the spring, the apple blossoms become one of the most beautiful sights in the entire area.

A mature environment from day one

In many new residential projects, small trees are planted, but these take years to grow large enough to provide shade and enhance the landscape.

Trebū HOME has chosen a different approach.

The project features large trees – oaks, lindens, maples, pines, and other species – that create a sense of a mature landscape from day one. As Neilands emphasises, people do not have to wait twenty years for the environment to become pleasant and fulfilling.

A courtyard that changes with the seasons

Dozens of different plants have been selected for the landscaping project to ensure the area remains attractive throughout the year.

In the spring, forsythias, ornamental apple trees, and shadbushes bloom.

In the summer, the area is filled with hydrangeas, a variety of shrubs, and lush greenery.

In autumn, oaks, maples, and other deciduous trees add colour to the landscape.

In winter, pines, spruces, and other conifers retain their character.

This means that the courtyard is never the same – it lives and changes along with nature.

A natural landscape, rather than an artificially created environment

The project preserves the existing terrain, makes use of subtle landscape features, and places special emphasis on the presence of the adjacent pine forest.

According to Edgars Neilands, the greatest compliment a landscape architect could receive would be to hear: “It seems as though this landscape has always been here.”

This is precisely the feeling that Trebū HOME was designed to evoke.

Beauty begins with high-quality solutions

A beautiful landscape is not created by plants alone.

The project includes professional tree-support systems, automatic irrigation and fertilisation, mulching, geotextiles, well-thought-out planting solutions, and rain gardens that help manage rainwater sustainably and ensure healthy plant growth in the long term.

When designing the site, special attention is also paid to the quality of the planting stock. For some trees and shrubs, the project specifies that they must not be replaced with other species in order to fully preserve the concept envisioned by the landscape architects.

Home begins in the courtyard

Good landscape architecture is not just about a beautiful view from the window. It influences our daily lives – how often we choose to go for a walk, how long the children play outside, how pleasant it feels to return home after a day’s work, and how much we want to sit down on a bench under a tree.

The philosophy of Trebū HOME is simple – a home does not begin at the apartment door, but the moment a person steps into the courtyard.

That is why landscaping here means much more than just trees and shrubs. It creates an environment in which you truly want to live.
